Kitchener woman’s assault charge changed to mischief in Guelph torch relay incident

GUELPH — An assault charge has been replaced with one of mischief against a Kitchener woman charged in the city’s Olympic torch relay interruption.

Brittney Simpson, 19, appeared Monday in Guelph provincial court to learn her assault charge was being withdrawn. She is now charged with committing mischief during the relay.

Assistant Crown attorney Steve Hamilton told court there was “no reasonable prospect of conviction” on the assault charge.

However, the Crown’s office is proceeding with the assault charge against 20-year-old Kelly Pflug-Back and added a second charge of mischief. Her charges relate to the same incident.

On Dec. 28, a group of protesters ran into security personnel surrounding a torchbearer during the relay through Guelph’s downtown. Cortney Hansen, who was carrying the torch, fell as a result.

Both Simpson and Pflug-Back are to return to court on March 5.
