TORONTO – A Toronto Jewish memorial chapel said Monday that it would help defray the costs of Corey Haim’s funeral in Toronto, while fellow actor Corey Feldman said another memorial will be held in Los Angeles.

An administrator with the Steeles Memorial Chapel said the actor’s family will get assistance in its time of need.

“We’re here to help the family and do whatever we can for them,” Marla Stewart said Monday of Haim’s funeral costs.

“That’s what we do, we’re known for that.”

Haim is expected to be laid to rest Tuesday in Toronto. Haim’s mother requested it be a private memorial.

In a statement circulated to several U.S. media outlets, Feldman said he would love nothing more than to be at the Haim’s funeral but will stay away due to the family’s “strong religious beliefs and need for privacy.”

However, he is helping to organize a memorial in Los Angeles in April.

“At that time, the media will be invited to honour and celebrate the legacy he has left behind, along with friends, fans and the rest of the Hollywood community,” Feldman is quoted as saying.

Born in Toronto in 1971, Haim died last Wednesday in Burbank, Calif., with an enlarged heart, pulmonary congestion and water in his lungs. He was 38. A cause of death has not been determined.

He rose to stardom in a string of ‘80s teen films including “Lucas” and “The Lost Boys,” but battled drug addiction later in life and filed for bankruptcy in 1997.

Feldman was quoted as saying his best friend was broke and at one point owed $200,000 in taxes.

Stewart disputed reports that the City of Toronto would help with the funeral expenses.

“I don’t know where the press got the notion that the city would be paying for his funeral, that’s absolutely not true,” she said.

The city also released a statement Monday saying it has “no involvement” in paying for Haim’s funeral.

The city notes that while it does cover funeral costs for indigent people, an evaluation of the person’s estate is done before any financial assistance is provided.
